Stitching and flying...

Do you stitch when flying? I always do and have not had a problem. I have had a few people ask me about this, so I will show you what I carry on to pass the time. I will also read at times, but rarely watch anything but the flight path...so I know where I am! Despite looking pretty conservative (read dull!), I seem to always get vacuumed at the security gate or patted down by a straight faced lady (much nicer when they at least introduce themselves before they get friendly!) and have my carry on searched. It is a bit of a family joke now. Often I am asked what I am making and no one has worried about a couple of needles ( I always carry spare needles and my embroidery scissors in my book through luggage...if I only have carry on I can buy nail scissors on arrival).
This is my new favorite little bag, courtesy of Anni Downs' new pattern...it is super cute and just the right size...I was making hexies, so there are cutout hexies, papers, spare magnifying glasses, glue stick (I put it in with my liquids for security checks) & thread.
When I am cross stitching, I carry my supplies in an A4 size rigid plastic clip case that I bought at Howards Storage World, but you can pick them up at Officeworks too. It is deep enough to hold my magnifying lens, light and Q snap frame, plus threads on a split ring (so I don't lose any).
You can use it as a table and it is quick to put everything away and fits in the seat pocket for meals.
I saw a great light here that would be perfect for both magnification and light when away from home...might pop it on my wish list I think!
I try and prepare fabric shapes before I leave, but when I need to cut I have three options...a mini dental floss container as it has a built in cutter, tiny plane safe scissors purchased at the last craft show or (not shown) a Clover brand round pendant cutter. Your choice.
I would love to hear your experiences or tips...I have flown throughout Asia and to the US in the last five years with no issues...have you had any problems?

I actually am flying next week and plan on bringing some sewing along as well. I usually bring the Clover cutter so that I don't need to worry about the scissors being taken from me. With my luck they would take my sweet little scissors, so I don't chance it. It sounds like you have nice people who security check you. I guess you just never know who might pat you down.

Hi!
I always have hand stitching when I travel, in the car, or on a plane. I keep my stitching, usually needle turn applique in a large ziplock plastic bag. It is see thru for the examiners. I have a few scissors that I take, small blunt nose blades. I usually have a needle book with a few pins and extra needle or two. There is a ribbon I attach the scissors to. When I go thru security, I pull out the plastic bag with the needle book and scissors right out on top. I don't bring fluids thru. I may have my little netbook computer, I put that out too, in it's own grey bin. I make sure my clothes dont have any metal buttons or clasps. I usually get to sail right thru security. I have had some employees say thank you for making their life easy!
Happy travels, take care, Leslie

I usually crochet when I fly because it's so mindless, and easier to see when the lighting is bad. But I always have a stitching project in my bag with tiny little scissors. And a book. And a magazine. And my camera(s). My carry-on backpack often withs more than my suitcase with the clothes! Airline regulations change from time to time, so I usually check online to see the latest before I pack.

Lucky you. When we travelled to New Zealand I got advised from the travel agency that no needles/scissors/etc was allowed. Not even my bamboo knitting needles.
Love your bag.
What are you stitching there??? It looks gorgeous.

what a clever chicky you are you have it all worked out. When i flew to Thailand about 4 years ago i took my English paper piecing and i had no issues at all carrying needles on board, i didn't have scissors as i had one of those clover thread cutting discs.....

Nice projects!

I try to have areas where there are a lot of fill in if I'm stitching, or work on hand work like hexies if I'm quilting when I fly.

Can't say that I've ever been game to take my stitching...always thought I'd be pulled up for needles and scissors! Must remember your tips for next time :)

I always work on something when I am flying, and the flight attendants are usually the most curious and tell me stories of an aunt or sister who make things too.

What a great blog post, and such lovely travel stitching bag piccy's! I haven't flown for years but do take a small stitching bag when I am away.

Hi I always take stitching with me. I take hand piecing - usually 9 patches.I have a A4 size ziplock bag. In it I put folded in half a piece of felt 9" x 11" (my design board). I pin two tiny applique needles and six tiny applique pins into the corner of the felt. A reel of thread, thread cutter and my squares in a small zip lock bag all go into the bigger bag.Easy peasy. I figure if I get the needles and pins taken off me it wont be the end of the world. I have never been queried about my little kit.
Cheers

Ahh I'm one of those people who can't even read on a plane, so I don't know if I would be game to try stitching? But I love the little dental floss, would never have ever thought of that! Clever girl Alison.

Perfect timing for your post - thanks for your tips! I have got my dental floss container ready, was trying to make the same Anni Downs bag to take as well. Not sure if that is going to happen though!

I had my little scissors taken away from me on the way HOME from Antigua last month. Got thru the scanners in Newark NJ Airport but the darn people in Antigua needed them :)

Thanks for sharing. Always good to know! I do like that case! Cute! I did buy myself airline approved scissors. You just never know! ;o) Cheers!
