Fun in my fabric world....

It was a train...

...not a light at the end of the tunnel that is my Sue Ross BOM!
Kerbang...it hit me today...after countless hours & agonies over this BOM I am ready to walk with it to the nearest bonfire & sacrifice it! It has not been a happy day...I felt happy that all the blocks were ready to go together...setting triangles measured & sewn on...recheck instructions...remeasure...sew!
Sounds great...but here comes that kerbang moment! It is not fitting together...yes, all the blocks are the same size, but no neat points where the blocks join...if the seam allowance is 1/2" it will be right...oh no...then I lose flowers in my applique medallion....I can feel tears coming.
I am so over it at the moment...DD has sat & patted my hand...I can see some ways around it, but I am not sure that I will like the "finish" of it. I feel like there is something I am missing...goodness knows what.
Packing it all up & putting it in a cupboard has been the solution...might go & mow the lawn...need some distance from it. It does look pretty....

It's a good idea to leave it for a day or two...think about it, sleep on it and see what happens. It looks gorgeous in the pictures...keep smiling!

Oh dear Alison,
So sorry. It's awful when this happens.
Put it away for another day.

You know needle turn applique is probably the easiest to unpick. The pieces will all stay nice and flat with their seam allowance neatly folded. So unpick your flower heads and move them down that way you will be happy with the end result and then you can stitch the quilt together.

When this happens I think its best to put it on hold ,and forget it for a day or two ,then come bach to it fresh ...love Jan xx

I was in the same boat as you i said to my puppy you are going to have a lovely bright quilt on your bed my quilt is not going together like yours unlike yours my borders are too short but there is a solution to your problem why dont you put a 1/2 inch border around your applique centre in a contrasting colour that will fit and you wont loose your flower centre.

Did you get the email from material obsession about recutting the fabric?

My solution is to leave it where it sits and that is in a bundle sitting on a chair. Its disappointing that this has not come together like it should but im off to start the Sarah Morell Quilt.

Oh dear........ fresh eyes I am sure will do the trick. You will probably think of a solution when you are nice and relaxed...... At least you have a tidy lawn! Hugz

There is so much work in those blocks I can imagine your annoyance! just leave it laid out for a few days and keep glancing at it here and there and something will come to you.

Pretty is an understatement, it is gorgeous. Can you add a few inches of the lilac fabric to the medallion so that you can do the 1/2 inch seam?

It is beautiful! I think you should still do the 1/4 inch seams the points will float and that is OKAY! Floating points are sometimes better anyway.

I was thinking like Jackie that you should do the 1/4 inch and float the points, but when Amanda said to unpick the flowers, I thought Oh! Do the 1/2 inch seams, and you could unpick the flowers just a bit and have them overlap the setting so it looks like the flowers are bursting from the center into the other blocks. But take a break from it or you won't like anything you do to it until you get some distance.

I'm setting in a million seams on that Carpenter's Wheel this weekend.

OMG is that what I have to look forward to!! It does look gorgeous though.
Makes me want to leave mine where it is. it seems you are not the only one having trouble putting it together Alison.

Oh Cardy.... hope that maybe a few days (or years... if it was me!) distance is a good thing!! Getting frustrated with it is hard. Hope DD's hand patting and comiserating helped!!

That chocolate we were talking about - I suggest you get some SOON and only after eating that look at it again!!! Hope there is a solution, it is too beautiful to live in a cupboard.

That is a masterpiece that needs viewing, forget Masterchef, that work is incredible and wait for the masterstroke to take you over then all will be solved. I can hear you saying "As if "" Now Now you can;t hise it away.

I know that feeling. Hopefully you can just put it aside for a bit and come back to it with a solution. It's beautiful and worth saving!

Oh no..I hate that feeling! Definitely leave it a while, before having another go.
I've only got three and a half blocks done..and I thought they were the hard bit! :-) so I'm feeling a little scared....

Oh, I so empathize with you. I wish I could give you a big hug. I agree with Jackie that floating is better than points cut off.

I once made a quilt with long rows of flying geese. I carefully pinned them together so the points would be perfect, but when they were sewn in their long rows, they didn't match up with the other long rows that they were to be joined with. So frustrating. Finally I decided to unpick them and resew them together without the careful pinning -- letting the geese fall where they may (including floating points). The rows matched up beautifully, and I have never looked at it with a critical eye as to the geese points or worried over it since. In fact, it's one of my favorite quilts.

PS -- your quilt looks sooooooooooo pretty!

PS & LOL: I say the same thing when I'm feeling pessimistic, "When you see the light at the end of the tunnel, it's just an oncoming train."

i have just finished my sue ross bom, and had a blast. i found the instructions very clear.
whilst putting the blocks and setting triangles together were a bit tricky, with a bit of a careful fudging, it turned out gorgeous. some of my seam allowances aren't exactly 1/4" or 1/2", but by doing it that way, it all fits.
i put an 8" border around it using amy butler's love. i used the green and blue spot. im going to bind it in that as well.
take a deep breath and go slowly. trust me it does work out.
i love mine, and i know you will too.
mine is now ready to be quilted - i can't wait to see it again. kx

Oh No.
Could putting sashings into the quilt help? Mind, too, that the sashings don't have to be the same width either.....maybe use random fabrics from the quilt but keep the fabric sashing around the centre block the same???
I am up to this point with Little Macca's Farm - am a little scared about laying the main blocks out on the floor to see if they really do go together....I can't look at it today so will do this another day; with my fingers crossed!
I hope it is a happy day for you when you do get your blocks together.

Oh dear...I can so relate. I can't count how many projects I have abandoned because they aren't perfect, or don't match up to my idea of perfect, anyway. Sounds like you have lots of good advice...and I agree, the quilt is FAR too beautiful to stash in a cupboard.
